This is an extremely interesting intaglio with 'Auld Reekie' carved into it which is the nickname for Edinburgh. It's a Scots phrase meaning “Old Smokey” and refers to the thick smoke from coal fires in the Old Town tenements. We understand it to have come about in the 1600's due to overcrowding and smokey skies in Edinburgh.
